Revolut outage: what happened and what to check in your account
Revolut’s outage on Tuesday, October 20, 2026 knocked out app sign-ins, card payments, ATM withdrawals and transfers for many customers from about 7 a.m. UK time. Google Cloud traced a wider failure in its London region (europe-west2) to a “power event,” and Revolut says customers’ money and data are safe. If your card was declined or a transfer stalled during the outage, check your transactions before you retry anything.
This guide covers the timeline, how to confirm whether Revolut is working now, what to check in your account afterwards, and the scam messages that tend to follow a big outage.
Before you start
- You’ll need: the Revolut app and Revolut’s system status page.
- Time: about 10 minutes to review your transactions.
- Applies to: Revolut customers in any country. Google’s incident was limited to its London cloud region, but Revolut’s services failed for customers well beyond the UK, including in Ireland.
- Status at time of writing: checked around 13:30 UTC on October 20. Google reported recovery of most workloads; Revolut had not announced a full fix. Check the status page for the current picture.
What happened on October 20
Problems started early on Tuesday and hit several UK banks and apps at once. Google’s own timeline puts the start of its incident at 23:08 Pacific time on Monday, which is 07:08 in London. Here is the sequence as reported by Google, Revolut and live coverage from TechRadar and The Stack (UK times):
| Time (UK) | What happened |
|---|---|
| about 06:45–07:00 | Downdetector reports for Revolut and Lloyds Bank start rising. Budgeting app Emma says Google Cloud London services have been affected since 7 a.m. |
| 07:08 | Start of Google Cloud incident in europe-west2 (London), per Google. |
| 08:54 | Revolut posts on X that it is “experiencing a service disruption affecting multiple services.” |
| Morning | Revolut’s status page lists 28 services as partially unavailable, including sign-ins, card payments, transfers, currency exchange, stock trading and live support chat. |
| 12:12 | Google says the power event in zone europe-west2-b is mitigated and expects partial infrastructure recovery within 30 minutes. |
| Early afternoon | Google says it is seeing recovery of services and tentatively expects existing workloads to be fully recovered by about 2 p.m. |
Other services reported trouble during the same window, including Spotify, Halifax and Lloyds, HSBC, Rightmove, DPD and the video platform used for some court hearings in England and Wales. Lloyds said its app was online and that it was monitoring “similar issues affecting other organisations.” For the banks other than Revolut, a link to Google Cloud has not been confirmed.
Was Revolut hacked?
Nothing points to a hack. Google attributes the incident to a power problem in one of its London data center zones, and Revolut’s statement says “all our customers’ money and data are safe.” Revolut had not publicly named Google Cloud as the cause when we checked, though it is a well-known Google Cloud customer and its failures lined up with Google’s incident window.
How to check whether Revolut is working now
- Open Revolut’s system status page and read the status of each service, not only the header. A partial outage can leave card payments down while the app opens normally.
- In the app, open chat. During the outage Revolut pointed customers to the Learn more option in its in-app chat, where you can select Notify me to get updates.
- Check Google Cloud Service Health and look for incidents tagged europe-west2. This tells you whether the underlying cloud problem is still open.
- Treat Downdetector as a signal, not a confirmation. Its numbers are user reports, and they spike whenever people notice something is wrong, including for unrelated local problems.
What to check in your account after the outage
Retrying payments during an outage is how most people end up paying twice. Once the app works, go through these in order:
- Card payments made between about 7 a.m. and the afternoon (UK time): look for duplicate entries. A declined or failed attempt can show briefly as pending before it drops off. If two completed charges remain for one purchase, contact the merchant first with both transaction references, then raise it in Revolut’s in-app chat.
- Transfers: open each transfer you sent on October 20 and check its status before sending it again. A transfer that looks stuck may still complete.
- Scheduled payments, direct debits and standing orders: confirm they went out. If a bill payment failed, pay it manually and tell the company, so a missed payment isn’t recorded against you.
- ATM withdrawals: if a machine didn’t give you cash but your balance went down, report it in the app with the ATM location and time.
- Currency exchange and stock trades: check what actually executed and at what price. Revolut’s status page listed both as affected.
Watch for outage scams
Big outages bring out fake support accounts and “your account is frozen” messages, because people are already expecting a problem. Revolut’s own scam guidance says it will never tell you your money is in danger or ask you to move money to a “safe account,” and will never ask for your passcode, PIN or card details. It also says it lets you know in the app before it calls you.
- Ignore replies from “Revolut support” accounts on X, Facebook or Instagram that ask you to DM them or click a link. Use the in-app chat.
- Don’t follow links in texts or emails about the outage. Revolut says genuine emails come only from no-reply@revolut.com; type revolut.com into your browser yourself.
- Hang up on any caller who mentions the outage and asks you to move money or read out a code.
Fake apps and fake invites use the same pressure tactics; our guides on spotting fake apps in Google Play and stopping fake calendar invites cover the warning signs.
What it means for you
Revolut runs on cloud infrastructure, and a power failure in one provider’s region was enough to stop payments for many customers for several hours. If Revolut is your main card, keep a second card from a different bank and some cash for days like this. The same applies to any app-only bank: one provider failing shouldn’t leave you unable to pay for fuel or groceries.
FAQ
Is my money safe after the Revolut outage?
Revolut says yes: “all our customers’ money and data are safe.” The outage affected access to services, not balances. Check your transactions anyway for duplicates or failed payments, as described above.
Will Revolut pay compensation for the outage?
Revolut had not announced compensation when we checked. If the outage cost you money, such as a late fee caused by a failed payment, raise it through the in-app chat with the details and dates. UK customers who aren’t satisfied with the response can take a complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
Why were Spotify and other apps down at the same time?
Spotify, Rightmove, DPD and others reported problems in the same window as Google’s europe-west2 incident. Google has not published a list of affected customers, so treat the link for each company as reported rather than confirmed.
Is the Google Cloud outage over?
At the time of writing, Google said the power event was mitigated and most workloads were recovering. Its status dashboard will show the incident as resolved once it closes, and Google usually publishes an incident report afterwards.
How we checked: we reviewed Revolut’s statement and status page, Google Cloud’s updates as quoted by The Stack, Irish Times and Cybernews, and live coverage from TechRadar and Tom’s Guide on October 20, 2026. Times are UK time as reported by those sources. We could not confirm the exact moment services were restored, and some outage reports for other companies are not confirmed as linked to Google.
