Claude Ultra plan: what the no 5-hour limit really means

Comparison of Claude Pro, Max and Ultra plans showing price, weekly usage and which plans have a five-hour session limit

Claude’s $200-a-month plan is now called Ultra, and its main change is that verified Ultra accounts no longer have Claude’s five-hour session limit. You still get a weekly cap of 10 times Pro usage, and the $100 plan keeps the Max name with its five-hour and weekly limits. Existing Max 20x subscribers were moved to Ultra automatically at the same price.

This guide covers what each plan now includes, what a “verified” account is, how to check whether your five-hour limit is gone, and how to decide between Max and Ultra. We checked Claude’s pricing page and the Claude Help Center articles on the Max plan, the Ultra plan and usage limits on November 2, 2026.

Before you start

  • Who this affects: anyone paying for Claude Max or deciding whether to upgrade from Pro
  • Where to check your status: Claude on the web, Settings > Usage
  • Cost: Max is $100 a month, Ultra is $200 a month, both billed monthly only
  • What you need to do: nothing to migrate; verification runs automatically

What changed with Claude Max and Ultra

The Claude Help Center’s Ultra article now opens with a plain statement: “The Max 20x plan is now called the Ultra plan.” Existing Max 20x subscribers move to Ultra automatically and pay the same $200 a month. The $100 tier is listed simply as Max on the Claude pricing page, where it used to sit under the Max 5x label.

Coverage of the change appeared on October 31, 2026. Anthropic has not published a dated news post or release note about it that we could find; the newest entry in Claude’s release notes on November 2 was still from October 21. One older Help Center page, “Choosing a Claude plan,” still used the Max 5x and Max 20x names when we checked, so expect to see both sets of names for a while.

Claude plans compared: Pro vs Max vs Ultra

Max$100/monthYes, 5x Pro every 5 hours5x Pro$100
Ultra$200/monthNone for verified accounts10x Pro$200

Both Max and Ultra have a weekly limit that applies across all models plus a separate weekly limit for Fable. The pricing page says Fable is included on both plans “for up to half your weekly limit.” Max and Ultra are currently sold as monthly subscriptions only, so there is no annual discount on either.

What “no 5-hour limit” means on Ultra

On Pro and Max, Claude meters your usage in a rolling five-hour session window. Hit that ceiling and you wait for the window to reset, even if you have plenty of weekly allowance left. Verified Ultra accounts skip that session window entirely. You can spend your weekly allowance in one long day if you want to.

The weekly cap does not go away. Ultra gives you 10 times Pro usage per week, and once it is used, you wait for the weekly reset like everyone else. If your problem is running out of weekly usage rather than hitting the five-hour wall, Ultra helps less than the “no limit” wording suggests.

What a verified Ultra account is

According to the Help Center, Anthropic verifies Ultra accounts automatically “using factors like your account and payment history” to prevent fraud and abuse. You can’t apply for it or speed it up. Until your account is verified, a temporary limit applies, and Anthropic removes it automatically once verification completes.

One detail trips people up: confirming your phone number at checkout is a separate step. The Help Center says it “doesn’t remove this limit.” Anthropic does not publish how long verification takes, so a brand-new Ultra subscriber should plan on having a session limit at first.

How to check whether your five-hour limit is gone

  1. Open Claude in a browser and sign in.
  2. Go to Settings > Usage (the direct address is claude.ai/settings/usage).
  3. Look for a Current session bar. If there is no Current session bar, your Ultra account is verified and has no five-hour limit.
  4. If the bar is still there, your account is still under the temporary limit. There is nothing to submit; check again later.

The same page shows your weekly usage, which is the number to watch on Ultra.

Max or Ultra: which one to pick

Ultra makes sense if you regularly hit the five-hour limit on Max during long sessions, such as big coding runs in Claude Code or long research threads, and you still have weekly allowance left when you do. It also doubles the included API credits to $200 a month, which matters if you call the API for side projects.

Max is enough if you rarely see the session limit, or if you mostly hit the weekly cap. In that case, the extra $100 buys more weekly usage (10x Pro instead of 5x) but not the uninterrupted sessions you might be paying for. Upgrading from Max to Ultra is prorated, so you can move up mid-cycle without paying twice for the same days. Cancellation and plan changes are under Settings > Billing.

If you share a computer or recently upgraded on a new device, it is also a good moment to log out of Claude on devices you no longer use. If you also pay for ChatGPT, note that OpenAI is heading the other way: from December, ChatGPT and Codex draw from one shared allowance, explained in our guide to the shared ChatGPT and Codex usage limit.

What we could not verify

Anthropic announced the change on October 30, 2026, in a post from its official Claude account on X, saying the 5-hour limit was being removed for verified Ultra accounts starting that day with most existing subscribers. The Help Center does not say whether anything changed for existing Max 5x subscribers beyond the name. Anthropic also doesn’t publish the exact checks behind account verification or a typical waiting time. Prices and limits in this article are as listed on November 2, 2026; Anthropic states that plans are subject to change.

FAQ

Is Claude Ultra unlimited?

No. Verified Ultra accounts have no five-hour session limit, but they still have a weekly limit of 10 times Pro usage and a separate weekly limit for Fable.

Did my Max 20x price change?

No. The Help Center says existing Max 20x subscribers move to Ultra automatically with no price change.

Why do I still have a five-hour limit on Ultra?

Your account probably hasn’t been verified yet. The temporary limit lifts automatically. Phone verification at checkout does not remove it.

Can I pay for Ultra annually?

Not currently. Both Max and Ultra are monthly subscriptions only.

Check your Claude usage before you upgrade

Open Settings > Usage in Claude and note your weekly usage at the end of a normal week. If you finish weeks with allowance to spare but keep hitting the session limit, Ultra fits; if you run out of weekly usage, compare that number against Ultra’s 10x Pro cap before upgrading. If Claude’s default model behavior is also slowing you down, see how to switch Claude from auto mode to manual model selection.
