Spotify podcast memberships: how to set one up and who qualifies

Infographic of Spotify podcast membership eligibility: Spotify for Creators or Megaphone hosting, 3 episodes, 100 listeners and 100 consumption hours

Spotify Memberships let podcasters charge fans directly on Spotify and keep 90% of the membership revenue. The feature began rolling out on October 20, 2026, in 34 markets, including the US, UK, Canada and Australia. To qualify, a show must be hosted on Spotify for Creators or Megaphone, have at least three published episodes, and reach 100 listeners or viewers and 100 consumption hours on Spotify in the previous 30 days.

This guide covers the eligibility rules, what you can put behind a membership, how the fee compares with Patreon, and a setup checklist for small and solo shows. It also lists what Spotify has not published yet, so you know what to check in your dashboard before you set a price.

Before you start

  • Check where your show is hosted. Only shows on Spotify for Creators or Megaphone are eligible under the launch rules.
  • Open your show’s stats for the last 30 days and note your Spotify listeners or viewers and consumption hours. You need at least 100 of each.
  • Look at your platform split. If most of your audience listens in another app, member content that lives on Spotify will reach fewer of them.
  • Decide what members get before you pick a price. Perks you can’t deliver every week are the fastest way to lose paying fans.

What Spotify launched on October 20

Spotify announced Memberships on its newsroom on October 20, 2026, five months after previewing the feature at its Investor Day on May 21. Creators choose what a membership includes: exclusive audio or video, bonus episodes, fewer ads, early access, archive access, or any mix of those. You can sell several tiers at different prices.

Fans on both Free and Premium accounts can join from a show’s page and listen to member content without leaving Spotify. A membership is a payment to the show, separate from a Spotify Premium plan. Members can display a badge when they comment on episodes, and creators can greet new members with a welcome clip.

On the creator side, Spotify lists targeted promotions, free trials, analytics on what drives sign-ups, and an export of member data. That export includes contact details, such as email addresses, for members who choose to share them.

Shows that launched with memberships include The Adam Friedland Show, Making Sense with Sam Harris, The Shawn Ryan Show, Two Hot Takes and The Sculpt Society. YMH Studios is adding memberships to 12 of its shows.

Who qualifies for Spotify podcast memberships

RequirementLaunch rule (October 2026)
HostingSpotify for Creators or Megaphone
Published episodesAt least 3
AudienceAt least 100 listeners or viewers on Spotify
ConsumptionAt least 100 hours on Spotify in the previous 30 days
LocationOne of the 34 launch markets

The 34 markets are Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK and the US. Large podcast markets such as Brazil, Mexico, India and Japan are not on the launch list.

The audience thresholds count Spotify activity only. A show with 5,000 monthly downloads in Apple Podcasts but 60 listeners on Spotify does not qualify yet. Spotify says the feature is rolling out, so an eligible show may not see the option on day one.

How much you keep, and what Spotify hasn’t said yet

Spotify says creators keep 90% of the revenue they generate through Memberships. The announcement does not say whether payment processing and sales taxes come out of Spotify’s 10% or out of your 90%, and it does not publish minimum or maximum prices or a payout schedule. Check those terms inside Spotify for Creators or Megaphone before you announce a price to your audience.

TechCrunch reported that membership purchases are made on the web rather than through app store in-app purchases. Spotify’s own post describes a “streamlined checkout” on the show page without naming the payment route. If your listeners are mostly on iPhone, test the join flow yourself once the option appears.

Spotify Memberships vs Patreon for podcasters

The trade-off is reach versus portability. Spotify puts the join button where your Spotify listeners already are, which removes the trip to a separate site. Patreon’s private feeds work in Apple Podcasts, Overcast and other apps, which matters if Spotify is not your biggest platform. Creators who already run a Patreon don’t have to choose one. Some will test Spotify with a single tier, such as an ad-free feed, while keeping Patreon for existing supporters.

How to set up a Spotify podcast membership

Spotify’s public pages do not show step-by-step setup screens yet. The official entry point is the Spotify for Creators Memberships page, which sends you to Spotify for Creators or Megaphone. Use this checklist to prepare:

  1. Sign in to Spotify for Creators (or Megaphone) and open your show. Confirm that you meet the 30-day listener and consumption-hour thresholds.
  2. Look for the Memberships option for your show. If it isn’t there and you meet every requirement, the rollout may not have reached your account yet.
  3. Pick one core perk you can deliver on a fixed schedule, for example ad-free episodes, a monthly bonus episode, or new episodes 48 hours early.
  4. Start with one or two tiers. You can add a higher tier with archive access or video later, once you know how many people join.
  5. Review the revenue, payout and tax terms shown in the dashboard, then set your price.
  6. Turn on a free trial or a targeted promotion for launch week, and record a short welcome clip for new members.
  7. Announce the membership in your main feed and tell listeners exactly what they get and how often.

Export member contact data regularly. A mailing list you control keeps working if you later change platforms. If you plan to email members, set up a professional email address on your own domain and make sure your SPF, DKIM and DMARC records are in place so your messages don’t land in spam.

What it means for listeners

If you listen on Spotify in a launch market, you will start seeing membership offers on some show pages. Joining pays the show directly, and the extra episodes or ad-free versions appear in Spotify. Spotify Premium does not include these perks, and a membership is separate from any Premium plan. Before paying, check whether you already support the same show on Patreon or another platform, because member content may not carry across.

FAQ

Can I use Spotify Memberships if my podcast is hosted on another host?

Not under the launch rules. Spotify lists Spotify for Creators and Megaphone as the only eligible hosts. Shows on other hosts that are only distributed to Spotify don’t meet the requirement.

How much does a Spotify podcast membership cost?

Each creator sets the price and can offer several tiers. Spotify has not published a standard price, minimum or maximum.

Does Spotify Memberships replace the Spotify Partner Program?

No. Spotify describes Memberships as an addition to its existing creator income tools, including advertising and the Spotify Partner Program.

Is Spotify Memberships available in my country?

It launched in 34 markets, listed above. Spotify has not given dates for other countries.

How we checked this: facts were checked on October 20, 2026, against Spotify’s newsroom announcement, the Spotify for Creators Memberships page, Patreon’s fee documentation and TechCrunch’s launch report. At the time of writing, Spotify had not published payout schedules, price limits or setup screenshots, so this guide does not describe them.

Next step: open your show in Spotify for Creators and check your last-30-day Spotify listeners and consumption hours. If you clear both thresholds, decide on one perk you can deliver every week before you look for the Memberships option.
