1Password vs LastPass: which password manager should a small business choose?

Prices checked on the official pricing pages on . Prices are in US dollars and can change at any time.

The short answer

Prices are close: 1Password Individual is $3.99 a month billed yearly with no free plan, and LastPass's blog lists Premium at $3 a month billed yearly. LastPass has a free plan, but it works on one device type only. For many people the deciding factor is trust: in 2022 an attacker copied backups of LastPass customer vaults (the sensitive fields were encrypted), and LastPass's March 2023 update lists what was taken. If you're choosing from scratch and happy to pay, 1Password is the easier recommendation. If price matters most, look at Bitwarden, which is free on unlimited devices.

Choose 1Password if

  • You want polished apps on every device and are happy to pay
  • You'd rather not use a service whose vault backups were copied in 2022
  • You want shared vaults for family or an assistant (Families covers 5 people)

Choose LastPass if

  • You only need passwords on one type of device and want it free
  • You already use LastPass and have followed its recommended actions after the 2022 incident
  • You need a family plan for up to 6 people
